Localising Intake24 for Brazil

Brazilian researchers localised Intake24 for Brazilian Portuguese to support doctoral dietary-recall research. With guidance from Monash University’s Intake24 team, the group completed translation and food-data adaptation over approximately fourteen months and is now progressing toward validation.

Localising Intake24 for Brazil

Background & Context

The Brazilian localisation of Intake24 began when a doctoral researcher was looking for free and comprehensive software to collect food recalls. After discovering Intake24 online, the Brazilian team contacted the project through the official website. The Monash University Intake24 team responded and arranged an initial online meeting to discuss the research needs and introduce the platform.

During the meeting, the teams discussed the existing Portuguese (Portugal) version and reviewed the main steps required to adapt Intake24 for Brazilian Portuguese. After several follow-up meetings, a professor joined the project and the team decided to proceed. Two undergraduate nutrition students were then recruited to support the work.

It took approximately one month from the first meeting to the start of localisation. Translation, food-data entry, and correction within Intake24 took about fourteen months. Throughout this process, the Intake24 team provided ongoing guidance, particularly Emma Foster, who shared detailed step-by-step instructions. The project is now moving into validation of Intake24 for use in Brazil.

Software discovery and initial contact

Identified Intake24 as a free, comprehensive dietary-recall system and contacted the team through the official website.

2

Scoping and localisation planning

Met with the Monash University Intake24 team, reviewed the Portuguese version, and defined the Brazilian localisation work.

3

Team formation

Added an academic collaborator and recruited two undergraduate nutrition students.

4

Translation and food-data adaptation (Approximately 14 months)

Translated the platform and entered and corrected the required food data.

5

Validation (Ongoing)

Progressed from localisation toward validating Intake24 for use in Brazil.
